The 4 Cs of a diamond
Every diamond is graded on four things. Together they decide how it looks and what it is worth.
Cut
How well the diamond is shaped and polished. A good cut gives the most sparkle, and can make a stone look bigger. Look for Excellent or Very Good.
Colour
White diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). G to I look white to the eye and are great value, especially in yellow gold.
D-FG-JK-MN-RS-Z
Clarity
How clean the diamond is inside. Grades run from Flawless to Included. VS1 and VS2 look clean to the naked eye at a sensible price.

Carat
The weight of the diamond (1 carat = 0.2 g). Two diamonds of the same weight can look different sizes, so we always check the measurements too.

- GIA, the Gemological Institute of America
- IGI, the International Gemological Institute
You can check any GIA report yourself on the GIA website. We always tell you clearly whether a diamond is natural or laboratory grown.
